Investigators say a bookcase door opened to a room loaded with dozens of weapons in the home of the former chairman of the Weston Police Commission -- who made his first court appearance on gun charges Wednesday.
Prosecutors have charged Rick Phillips with 15 counts of illegally possessing assault weapons, 90 counts of possessing a large-capacity magazine and five counts of possession of a silencer.
The former official did not enter a plea during the hearing. His case was transferred to court in Stamford, which is typical for cases involving more serious charges.
News 12 Connecticut obtained his arrest warrant, which describes new details in the case.
Police began investigating Phillips in March after a domestic incident at his home in which he allegedly threw a gun at someone.
As a result of that police visit, he was ordered to turn over all of his weapons.
A records check showed Phillips had 34 guns and no high-capacity magazines registered in his name. But the woman involved in the incident told police he had many more weapons in his home.
She directed them to the bookcase, where police say they found 106 guns, 90 high-capacity magazines and five homemade silencers. Fifteen of the guns were illegal under the state's assault weapons ban, according to authorities.
Town records show Phillips served on the Police Commission for 12 years, through 2013. Toward the end of his tenure, he was chairman.  He's also the former president of the Weston Kiwanis Club.
Phillips had no comment following the hearing.
