Police say a man from Brightwaters is facing DWI charges after plowing his car with two passengers inside into a brick wall in front of a West Islip home overnight.
First responders and neighbors were able to save the life of two people trapped in the burning car, which was heading southbound on Alwick Avenue right around 1 a.m.
Neighbors told News 12 that the driver revved the engine, blew a stop sign at the intersection of Alwick and North, and then slammed into the wall.
One neighbor, who asked not to be identified, says he approached the burning car.
"I noticed there was another occupant in the front seat and he was wedged in between the dashboard and the front seat," he said. "I reached in…the officer came next to me, we were pulling and tugging. He was stuck underneath that dashboard, and we finally got him out."
Police were then able to get the second trapped victim out of the back seat.
Both were rushed to the hospital – as was the driver, 22-year-old Jack Magee, who was charged with DWI.
The two passengers are hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Magee sustained injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Given the force of the crash and the extent of the damage, Suffolk police say it's remarkable that nobody was killed.
Police say Magee will be arraigned when the extent of his injuries are determined.
