Cuomo vs. Nixon: Where they stand on the issues
As voters head to the polls today in the state's primary elections, all eyes are on the race that is pitting a party mainstay against a progressive challenger.
Cynthia Nixon is hoping to unseat incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo as the Democratic nominee for New York governor.
Cuomo, now in his second term, is a former state attorney general and many believe he could be a 2020 presidential contender.
Nixon was once best known as Miranda from "Sex and the City," but the actress-turned-candidate is now making waves as a self-proclaimed Democratic socialist.
Cuomo points to a list of progressive accomplishments, including free tuition at state colleges and universities, a $15 per hour minimum wage and a gun control agenda. That agenda led the National Rifle Association to sue him and the state, slap him with an F rating, and even run ads against his re-election.
However, Nixon says Cuomo is not progressive enough. She's called for single-payer health care for all, universal rent control and the legalization of marijuana. They are all area ideas the current governor has yet to fully embrace.
Nixon calls Cuomo "corrupt," after some of the governor’s former associates landed behind bars.
It’s the same term she uses for President Donald Trump, who she says should be impeached. Cuomo has no love for the president either, calling his policies "un-American."
However, tonight's vote is not about the president, it’s about Cuomo, Nixon, the future of New York's Democratic Party, and quite possibly, the future of New York state.
