Democrats criticize Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino for having a second job
Westchester Democrats are criticizing County Executive Rob Astorino for having a second job, saying he should be devoting all his time to his work in Westchester.
Astorino is paid $160,000 a year as county executive. He also receives $30,000 annually as a consultant for Townsquare Media, a Connecticut-based media company that owns more than 300 radio stations around the country. Astorino has an extensive background in broadcasting, having worked at Westchester radio stations before joining ESPN Radio.
County Legislator Peter Harckham (D-District 2) cites a clause in the county charter about the executive that says, "He shall devote his whole time to the duties of his office and shall hold no other public office." Harckham wants a hearing to be called into Astorino's work, because he says he wants to know how much time Astorino is spending away from the people of Westchester.
Astorino spokesman Ned McCormack says this information has been disclosed since 2010 and if it was such a big issue, it would have come up last year during the race for county executive. Supporters also point out that Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Astorino's rival in New York's gubernatorial race, received a $188,000 advance for a book from a publisher.
