Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in his own home.
The acting prime minister says a group attacked the home around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, killing Moise and shooting his wife who is now recovering.
News 12 spoke with a family from Potsdam, New York, living in Haiti.
They say the assassination has families on edge, worried about their already unstable country reaching a breaking point.
"It's hard, it's hard. We don't know what's going to happen. We don't know what's going to happen," says Verdier Cherfils.
"What we've heard are people are in shock. People are afraid. They're afraid about their own security," says Amber Cherfils.
The couple says flights are canceled and the country is currently at a standstill.
"Everything's quiet, no transportation, everything's shut down completely," says Verdier Cherfils.
Amber met Verdier in Haiti as a child - her parents were missionaries. When she returned to upstate New York, he followed. The two reconnected, married and returned to Haiti to do their own mission work. For years, they say the country has been unstable and now Wednesday's assassination of President Moise is sparking new fears that the country may fall into chaos.
The couple runs a Haitian guest house for missionaries and was set to welcome back guests next month for the first time since the pandemic, but now this latest political crisis is forcing families into lockdown.
The president was 53 years old and in office since 2017.
