Fines levied against Indian Point over siren system
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) levied fines against Entergy for failing to get the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant?s new siren system up and running.
Plant owner Entergy was supposed to have 150 new sirens up and running by the end of January. When it became clear that deadline could not be met, the company asked for and was granted more time to finish the work. But after the new system failed a crucial final test, Entergy asked for another extension beyond the April 15 deadline. That request was denied by the NRC.
Monday, Entergy was fined $130,000 and ordered to respond within 30 days. Entergy spokesman Jim Steets tells News 12 Westchester the company remains committed to getting a new siren system up and running as soon as possible.
"Entergy takes full responsibility for the delay in putting a new siren alert notification system into service and will respond to the NRC within the 30 day required time limit," Steets said.
While the new siren system is not yet ready, the old system of 156 sirens remains operational and would still be used if there should be an emergency at Indian Point.
