A small fire at a hospital in Monmouth County has forced the relocation of several patients.

The small fire early this morning caused water damage to their rooms at Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel.

The fire started around 3:30 a.m. in the ICU break room.

Officials say the source of the fire was a toaster oven.

That fire was almost immediately extinguished and no one was hurt, but the smoke activated the sprinkler system, according to the Hackensack Meridian vice president of communications.

The sprinklers caused water damage, and patients had to be moved out of the ICU to other areas of the hospital while it was cleaned up. Officials say they should be returning to their rooms shortly.

More damage was caused when the water seeped down to the floor below. A total of six patients had to be relocated to Riverside Hospital in Red Bank.

The patients who were transported are not critical according to the hospital, and include one who is scheduled to be released Monday. That discharge will still happen, but from Riverside Hospital instead.
