A grand jury found that an Orange County police officer who returned fire during a domestic call acted in self-defense.

Anthony Bostick opened fire on 51-year-old Montgomery Police Chief Arnold Amthor as police tried to arrest Bostick inside his apartment on Abbey Avenue in Maybrook in May.

The chief was shot in the shoulder by Bostick, and another officer returned fire.

Bostick turned the gun on himself seconds later, firing a single shot to the head, according to District Attorney David Hoovler. 

On Friday, a grand jury cleared the officer involved of any wrongdoing.

Hoovler says before police went in, they spoke with Bostick from outside the apartment for nearly an hour before he threatened to hurt himself and stopped communicating.

It's not clear whether the officer involved is back on duty. Chief Amthor is back to work.
