A grand jury has declined to indict an 18-year-old football player who was charged in the death of his mother's ex-boyfriend.

Luis Moux told police that he put his mother's ex, Stanley Washington, in a chokehold because he was beating her. The incident happened Aug. 14 inside the mother's University Avenue apartment.

The teen's lawyers argued that Moux acted in order to save his mother.

"He's done what any young man would do, he defended his mother from, in my opinion, being murdered," said Walter Fields, one of Moux's attorneys.

Moux received an outpouring of support after being charged in the death. Family, friends and community members rushed to his defense.

Moux's lawyers say the grand jury spoke with Moux, reviewed all evidence and deliberated earlier in the month, coming to the conclusion that there would be no further prosecution.

"We do acknowledge that Mr. Washington's family suffered a great loss and we pray for them," said Ronald Fisher, another of Moux's attorneys.

News 12 reached out to Washington's family for comment but has not heard back.
