Hidden treasure: Antique trolley car found inside Mercer County home
A piece of New Jersey history is about to be restored after an antique trolley car was discovered right in the middle of a Mercer County home.
The trolley dates back to the early 1900s. It will be restored and eventually displayed in a New Jersey museum. It was found inside a foreclosed Hamilton Township home earlier this year – a trailer framing the entire trolley car.
“We just knew there was something here. I guess because of how well preserved it was because of the house built around it,” says real estate investor Brandon Breza. “The windows are full intact, the door. It would be a shame that it would be bulldozed and given away.”
The trolley-home was first used during the Great Depression. Former owner Evelyn Breece says that she and her family moved into the home in the 1950s and lived there for about 10 years. The 89-year-old and her daughter got emotional as they watched the trolley being taken away.
“I hope I live to see the day when it’s refurbished and I could go and see it again,” Breece says.
Breza says that he hopes once the trolley is restored that it brings joy to many New Jersey residents.
"I had my son here on Sunday and he was so excited about this and we took a picture,” he says. “Could you imagine? This is just one child who was really happy and brought joy to his day.  Could you imagine the masses of people that this would provide happiness to?”
Liberty Historic Railway of New Jersey will be funding the restoration of the trolley car. The group says that it may take up to three years to complete.
