Hundreds of Rockland County residents gathered Tuesday morning to pay tribute to those who have served and died for the United States.
For the veterans of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars who marched toward the soldiers? monument in downtown Suffern, it was a day of memories and reflections on patriotism.
?We didn't ask why we should, we just went,? says World War II veteran Sydney Guttenberg. ?It was the right thing to do.?
Not all the veterans, however, are convinced Americans today realize what their generation had to sacrifice, and how much was on the line.
?I don't think they know about the wars, why they were fought,? says Navy veteran Pat O?Brien.
In the Town of Haverstraw, the veterans gathered to see a vital bridge named in their honor, Veterans Memorial Bridge, which leads right to the local American Legion post.
?We felt it was appropriate to build this bridge and name it after the veterans that have served this country,? says Haverstraw Town Supervisor Howard Phillips.
This Veterans Day marks the 90th anniversary of the armistice which ended World War I.
