Important deadline looms for flood-weary farmers
As Washingtonville farmers cope with devastating floods, they also have to think about a pending insurance deadline.
Representatives from the state's agriculture division spent Friday assessing the damage in Orange County. They are hoping to get federal and state funding through the USDA for the area?s flood-weary farmers. Debuc's Sod Farm in Pine Island is completely submerged under water from the Wallkill River, which flooded almost every single farm in Pine Island.
A major concern for farmers is the May 10 planting deadline for crop insurance. They must spend time this weekend pumping out water in an attempt to get their crops in the ground by that date. In addition to trying to save their crops, farmers will also be hoping for a helping hand from the government.Related Information Orange Co. plagued by persistent flooding problems Rising Wallkill River prompts more evacuations Washingtonville residents return to survey damage
