Indian Point emergency sirens put to final test
Officials say on-site observers confirm all of the 156 sirens around the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant sounded properly during emergency tests Wednesday.
It is the last official test of the old system that had suffered from repeated problems in the past. Plant owner Entergy?s spokesperson Jim Steets says the new emergency siren system should be in place by the state-mandated date of January 31, 2007. Steets says the counties should be very pleased by the effectiveness of the new system.
During Wednesday?s tests, officials say only three of the 156 sirens in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange counties had some problems. Entergy says sensors used for monitoring failed, but on-site observers confirmed the sirens worked properly.
