Students at a Monmouth County high school resumed classes at Tuesday after an impromptu extended winter break after part of the building’s ceiling caved in.
Keyport High School students had been off since their winter break after the school’s first-floor ceiling became compromised on Dec. 31, according to school district officials.
Officials said the ceiling needed to be demolished and electrical work completed before students could return.
"We don't have an official insurance determination. But there is speculation as to steam heating downstairs, a conduit attached to the ceiling, and unfortunately at the same time, we had a leak in the front of the building, so we were able to fix that at the same time. We have had a lot going on the last few weeks," Keyport Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Savoia told News 12 New Jersey.
According to a letter from Savoia, the following changes have been made to the school’s schedule:
  • Classes will be held on March 20, with an early dismissal.
  • Classes will also be in session June 19 through 22 and June 25.
As a result of the extended winter break, graduation for seniors was moved from June 18 to June 25.
