A Connecticut lawmaker is calling for dash cameras to be installed on police cars after a video showed officers allegedly beating a teenager in Bridgeport.
State Rep. Christopher Rosario said he and community leaders met with Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez to discuss the incident.
Perez has said he has placed several officers on administrative status while the Office of Internal Affairs investigates.
The Friday video shows Aaron Kearney, 18, being forced face-first against a car hood while his mother pleads for police not to hurt him.
Officer Christina Arroyo was placed on desk duty after the video shows her hitting Kearney several times.
According to police, Kearney raised his hand to police during his arrest, but his family says the officer's reaction was over the top.
"The excessive force is what we have a problem with,” says Tiffany Elliott, Kearney’s aunt. “The female officer who was continually pounding him in the head and then threatening my sister in law she shouldn't be in law enforcement. If you don't have the control that officers have to have then you should not be holding a badge.”
The family has hired a lawyer.
We reached out for comment, but have not heard back.
Police say they responded to the scene after the teen reported a minor traffic accident.
Rosario, a Bridgeport Democrat, says state funds are available to acquire and install dash cameras.
AP wire services helped contribute to this report.
