The family and lawyers of a Bronx man detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement say his medical conditions are going untreated in the facility he’s been held in.
Inocencio Roman came to the Bronx 20 years ago from Mexico and has been detained at a New Jersey ICE facility for a year and a half.
As result of a 2018 arrest that ended up as a non-criminal violation, ICE became aware of Roman's presence and detained him shortly after.
His son, Carlos Ramos, says his father's health was improving before being detained but now in the facility, he is slowly dying because he has not received his proper treatment.
The 46-year-old father has Type 2 diabetes, an advanced liver disease and a toxin build up in his brain. He also has a severe foot infection that has put his foot at risk of amputation.
Carlos is a DACA recipient but has put his college career on hold to provide for his mother and U.S.-born sisters who are ages 17 and 5.
"When he was taken away, I had to drop out of John Jay in order to help the family with the bills and keeping up with the rent and everything," Carlos says.
A Manhattan judge denied Roman’s application for permanent residence claiming it wouldn't cause his children hardship, but his lawyers are appealing it with new evidence. They also filed a letter requesting parole last week with ICE that would allow him to receive medical attention at home while he waits for the appeal results.
