A Long Island boxer is in critical condition following a brutal knockout.
The promoter for 27-year-old super welterweight Patrick Day says the Freeport native suffered a traumatic brain injury and is currently in a coma following his injury Saturday night.
It happened while Day was in the ring with opponent Charles Conwell in a USBA title bout in Chicago.
Day went down in the 10th round and stayed down for several minutes. He was rushed to the hospital where he underwent emergency brain surgery.
Father Douglas Arcoleo of Our Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church says parishoners in Freeport have been praying for Day.
"When one member of the community suffers, we all suffer," says Arcoleo. "We're not even a village or a community, we're a family."
Day spent a lot of time in Freeport's Northeast Park training for his bouts. Fellow Long Island boxing star Chris Algieri has known Day since they were teenagers. They even met in the ring and sparred with one another. He was watching Saturday's match.
"He's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Super hard worker in the gym and he's a warrior when he fights," says Algieri. "Pat was reeling a little bit. He got hit  with a couple shots you could tell bothered him, but he was still throwing punches back. It wasn't like the fight needed to be stopped."
News 12 is told Day's family and his trainer are by his side in the hospital.
"He's in the fight for his life now and if anyone can do it, Patrick's got the will power, Patrick's got the discipline and that warrior spirit, and we're all hoping and praying," says Algieri.
