A project to reduce flooding in Mamaroneck remains on hold after millions in federal funding was denied.

Two years ago, Congress approved millions of dollars in funding for a mitigation project developed by the Army Corps of Engineers. Last month, officials learned that the federal Office of Management and Budget had decided to deny them the funds.

The $82 million project would address issues along the Mamaroneck and Sheldrake rivers. The project would widen and deepen the rivers, build retaining walls and remove bridges to alleviate flooding. The federal government had committed to paying $50 million; the state, the Village of Mamaroneck and Westchester County would pick up the remaining $32 million.

Rep. Elliot Engel, who represents Mamaroneck, says the president is to blame for this turn of events.

"This is typical of the Trump administration, this is typical of their lack of care for New York," Engel says.

Local and federal leaders are vowing to fight back. Residents worry that, if no action is taken, another major flood could devastate their neighborhood again.
