A group in Rockland County is doing its part to stop the spread of coronavirus by making hospital masks.
The Masked Warriors Facebook group was formed just days ago, and by Sunday it had almost 400 members working toward making the masks.
"We've had some people produce 30 in a day and others four in a day," says Sabrina Roffman.
Roffman says they found a sewing template to create a mask as close to what hospitals are are currently using. They are still trying to determine what's the best filter to put inside to stop respiratory particles from spreading.
She says they are reusable and will be sterilized at the hospital.
The creation of masks comes after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday the state is in desperate need of N95 masks. He says the state has acquired 2 million, but it won't be enough.
Roffman says they are waiting on Good Samaritan and Nyack hospitals to approve the use of the masks. In the meantime, their goal is to make as many masks as they can. Nyack hospital says it accepting the masks, which will be evaluated and used according to CDC guidelines.
On Sunday, Cuomo encouraged the federal government to nationalize medical supply acquisition. Cuomo says this would help prevent price gouging. He says the state needs supplies immediately and only the federal government can make that happen.
