Evelyn Guidali has been leaving small mementoes such as photos and candles at the gravesite of her daughter, Adria, in Nanuet, but beginning next month, she will no longer be able to do it.
Effective Aug. 15, St. Anthony's Cemetery will enforce a long-established rule prohibiting gravesite decorations. American flags and wreaths will be permitted at the cemetery only during the holidays.
"I don't think it's a very nice idea," Guidali says. "Your beloved passed away, and you want to show some kind of tribute to them."
A sign has been placed at the cemetery entrance notifying visitors of the rules. The New York Archdiocese says letters are also being sent to families informing them of the cemetery's decision.
