The administration of the Village of Unionville in Orange County installed four surveillance cameras in an effort to deter crime.
The footage from the cameras is fed from a monitor inside the Unionville Village office, allowing three people from the local Neighborhood Watch to access the streaming video from their home computers.
The cameras, which were mounted in the beginning of the year, mainly capture mundane things, but officials say the equipment can help the Neighborhood Watch in case of a criminal activity in progress.
Sue Pendergast, head of the Neighborhood Watch, says the cameras have already made a difference by deterring would-be criminals at the Village Park, which has been plagued by vandalism and graffiti.
"I know that a lot of people have said they feel a lot safer," Pendergast says.
Local residents say they do not mind the cameras keeping an eye on their town.
