Every year on Oct. 23, the family of Lance Cpl. Craig Wyche makes a solemn trip to Ossining as the village honors his memory.
Wyche was one of 241 U.S. service members killed in the Oct. 23, 1983 terrorist attack at a Marine peacekeeping force stationed at the Beirut International Airport.
He was a 1982 graduate of Ossining High School. His family, friends, veterans, officials and students gathered on the front lawn of the school Wednesday to pay tribute to him.
Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity declared Wednesday Lance Cpl. Craig Wyche Day in the village.
"It's important for young people in Ossining to remember all of those who came before them and to keep in mind – we’re all part of a much greater society," she said.
As the somber sound of taps played, a Marine laid a wreath at a tree planted in Wyche's memory. Family members say the ceremony means the world to them.
“Something like this, I'll never forget. Seems like just yesterday that I was riding up here. So sad…I'm glad they do this for him every year," says brother Glenn Wyche.
Each year, the Marine Corps League gives $500 scholarship to a graduating Ossining High School student in Wyche's honor.
