A physician has been sentenced to one to three years behind bars for endangering the welfare of a special-needs teenager.
Ray Magliulo was a physician for 30 years.
Earlier this year, Magliulo was convicted of endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person. Magliulo was arrested in January 2017 after a special-needs teenager accused the doctor of inappropriate sexual contact at the doctor's home in August 2016.
The father of the victim, who News 12 chose not to identify, said after the sentencing, "I know how my son was betrayed and I'm grateful that there is protective measures on the books for these types of crimes."
During the trial in Riverhead, the special-needs teen took the stand. During the testimony, he said the doctor made him watch pornography before engaging in sexual contact.
Despite being convicted by a jury, Magliulo is maintaining his innocence.
Magliulo's attorney read letters from supporters in court before the sentencing saying he's a "great father, husband and mentor" with a "sound moral character."
His attorney has filed an appeal, but if that does not go through, Magliulo must surrender on Oct. 7 to begin that sentence.
Magliulo was also made to sign an order of protection to stay away from the victim for the next 11 years. His medical license has been suspended.
