Police: 11 hurt in Southern State Parkway crash, 1 driver charged
State police say 11 people were injured in a chain-reaction crash on the Southern State Parkway early Sunday morning, and one driver is being charged with DWI.
The crash involved four vehicles. It happened shortly after 2 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the parkway near Exit 18 in West Hempstead.
State police say a Ford Econoline van was disabled and stopped in the right lane, with a Nissan Pathfinder behind it. A Honda Accord struck the Nissan from the rear, causing the Nissan to hit the Ford.
Investigators say the Honda then lost control and struck a fourth car, a Toyota Sienna.
Two people were injured in the Ford vehicle, eight occupants of the Nissan were injured, and the driver of the Honda was injured. There were no injuries to the occupants of the Toyota. A total of 11 people were hospitalized.
State police say the driver of the Honda is being charged with driving while intoxicated. He has been identified as 31-year-old Tyler Jackson, of Rosedale.
Jackson suffered the most serious injuries, with facial trauma and a pelvic injury, according to police.
The roadway was shut down for several hours, but has since been reopened.
State police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at 631-756-3300.
