A man was killed in a house fire in South Blooming Grove on Monday.

Police say 52-year-old Roger Gibbs died in the fire.

Firefighters rushed into a burning home on Merriewold Lane North at around 4:30 a.m.

The fire, which is under investigation, gutted the split-level home.

The rest of the surviving family is now homeless.

Mayor George Kalaj issued a statement at the village board meeting Monday night thanking the first responders, saying in part, "These heroic volunteers and first responders are always on the front-line risking everything for the safety and well-being of residents of the village and we are very thankful for them."

Kalaj went on to say that the village will work together to improve and enhance fire prevention and safety in the village.
