Police nab alleged cheese robber in Middletown
Middletown police arrested a man who allegedly broke into a home on Watkins Avenue early Thursday morning, trying to make away with a variety of cheeses.
According to authorities, a homeowner called 911 at around 5:40 a.m. and reported a home invasion. Officers who arrived at the scene found 22-year-old Joseph Weiss, of Middletown, being subdued by one of the occupants of the house, police say.
The homeowner told police that he caught Weiss taking groceries out of his refrigerator. Officers recovered cheese from Weiss when he was taken into custody.
"He actually had stuffed the cheese into his waistband and into his pockets," says Lt. Paul Rickard, of the Middletown Police Department. "Again, it was various kinds of cheese."
Weiss was taken to Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown to be treated for injuries he received during a scuffle with the homeowner.
Weiss has been charged with second-degree burglary, assault and unlawful possession of marijuana.
