Police are stepping up security around Rockland County's busiest malls in the wake of last weekend's mass shootings in Ohio and Texas.

Clarkstown Officer Norman Peters took News 12 on a patrol Wednesday of The Shops of Nanuet and the busy Route 59 retail corridor.

Peters says police are always on the lookout for specific signs, and paying attention to what many shoppers ignore.

“It being a warm day, if somebody is dressed for the cold weather, a lot of layers, maybe they are trying to conceal something,” he says. “Somebody continuously circling, somebody who's been parked in a spot for a long time, a vehicle parked illegally.”

Police tell News 12 that there are always two police officers stationed at the Palisades Center Mall, every afternoon and evening.  It gets ramped up on the weekend when the mall gets busier.
“We believe that presence is powerful,” says Peters.

Clarkstown Detective Pete Walker says local police are also in continual contact with federal, state and local officials about possible area targets.
“What we're doing is trying to determine is there's a threat or an imminent threat to this area. And if so, then we'll redirect our resources accordingly,” says Walker.

Police are also asking the public's help to keep shoppers safe, reminding people to always say something if they see something unusual.
