President Donald Trump on Wednesday retweeted three graphic videos posted by an obscure, anti-immigrant British political group.
The videos claim to show Muslims committing acts of violence.
The tweets originated from Jayda Fransen, deputy leader of the group Britain First. One video claims to show an "Islamist mob" pushing a boy off of a roof and killing him. The second is titled "Muslim Destroys a Statue of Virgin Mary." The third tweet says the video shows a Muslim migrant beating up a Dutch boy on crutches.
Reactions to the president's retweets came quickly from the Muslim-American community on Long Island. Hafiz Rehman, who is on the Board of Trustees of the Muslim Center of Long Island, called Trump's actions "totally irresponsible."
In defense of the president's retweets, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Mr. Trump was addressing what she described simply as "the threat."
"Whether it's a real video, the threat is real and that is what the president is talking about," she said.
British Prime Minister Theresa May was critical of the retweets, saying it was "wrong" for Trump to have posted them.
