Lakeland Central District is closing down after medical officials confirmed a case of the coronavirus in a Cortlandt mother of two students, one who attends a public school.
“With 5,400 students, 1,500 employees, we cover a lot of ground -- 40 square miles--so there's a lot of potential for the virus to spread,” said Lakeland Superintendent Dr. George Stone.
He said no students or staff in the district have tested positive yet for the virus. He added that the mother is also recuperating.
Top county medical officials are now involved in the case and the district, which closed all eight schools Wednesday, will remain shut until at least Monday.
Bedford Central Schools also closed Thursday and will remain closed through Sunday.
Bedford Central School officials released a statement that a teacher at Fox Lane Middle School is now in self-quarantine, pending virus test results.
In Yorktown, town officials closed community centers and canceled public activities, in addition to closing all five schools in the district from Thursday through Sunday.
The town doesn't have a confirmed case, but officials said the decision was made as a precaution.
School officials for Lakeland Central District said they are waiting test results for the students of the parent with the virus. They said they should have those results in two days.
