Some families will be able to return to their upper floor Bronx apartments Tuesday after the deadly Sunday fire that killed 17 people.
Councilmember Oswald Feliz says city officials will be helping to relocate any families that don't want to return because of the trauma from the fire.
FDNY Commissioner Dan Nigro said the victims that are in critical condition are still fighting for their lives in the hospital.
As for those that have been forced to leave their homes, some are slowly starting to return.
The focus of the investigation turns now to the self-closing doors, which the Department of Housing Preservation and Development says are essential to fire safety.
Commissioner Nigro said the apartment building did have that safety feature but asked why the door didn't close once the family left the apartment.
A source tells News 12 that the building on East 181st Street has not had self-closing door violations since 2019, in which that violation was inspected and fixed. But due to the door staying open on Sunday, heavy smoke poured into the hallways and caused many of the deaths in the fire.
The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
According to the Associated Press, a relative says three children were fatal victims of parents Haja Dukuray and Haji Dukuray. No word if the children’s parents survived at this time.
