There are 150 new sirens in the 10-mile emergency zone around the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. During Wednesday?s tests, the sirens were twice triggered by surrounding counties. They were triggered a third time by plant owner Entergy from its emergency operations facility. Not all sirens sounded, but both county and Entergy officials say progress is being made to meet a mid-April deadline. The old 156 siren system is being replaced because of repeated failures in recent years. The new system was supposed to be operational by the end of January. That deadline was extended due to construction delays and engineering problems with a county-owned communications tower in Valhalla.
Entergy officials say the fine tuning of the new system will continue over the next few weeks. They are optimistic the April 15 deadline will be met.
