A Hudson Valley lawmaker is calling for the state's controversial bail reform law to be tossed out.
From a Christmas Eve killing to a violent domestic attack caught on camera, suspects are being released without bail under new reforms after allegedly committing heinous crimes.
Assemblyman Karl Brabenec, who didn't vote for the law, says it's backfiring and putting victims at risk. He's now sponsoring a bill to throw out the reforms and have the bill go back to the way it was.
"Let's start over again. Let's bring district attorneys to the table, police chiefs to the table, sheriffs, prosecutors," says Brabenec.
Brabenec isn't the only lawmaker concerned with how the changes are panning out. Even those who supported bail reform, like Sen. James Skoufis, are now speaking out against it. Gov. Andrew Cuomo also said earlier this month that changes may need to be considered.
Brabenec says it could take several months before any changes are made, and while he and other lawmakers are critical of the current law, most agree that some sort of bail reform is needed.
