State Sen. John Brooks talked to some of the people in his district the only way he can, through a translator, as he tries to reaching out to the Latino community by hosting a town hall where the information was in Spanish and English.

About two dozen people attended the town hall in Freeport. They wrote down their questions on note cards, and then the translator read them aloud to Brooks and a number of other people on the panel who provide services in the community.

Organizers say they want people to know what services are available to them and where they can get them.

Lilian Garcia is originally from El Salvador but has lived on Long Island for more than 30 years. She attended so she can take the information back to her church members.

Many of the questions were about immigration, jobs and family, but what people wanted to talk about more than anything were driver's licenses. Brooks says it's an important issue that needs to be looked at and studied.
