Suspended Spring Valley cop fires back at accusers
A suspended Spring Valley police officer accused of filing false reports and conspiracy faced his accusers in court Tuesday, claiming that witnesses against him were coerced.
Officer David Lebron says accusations that he warned local bars before they were raided, worked as a private security guard while in uniform and solicited sex while on duty are false.
Lebron believes the witnesses who testified against him were pressured by Spring Valley police investigators. To support his claim, Lebron handed out copies of a recording he allegedly made last May in his car with one of the witnesses, identified as illegal immigrant Juan Carlos.
On the recording, Carlos can be heard saying in Spanish: ?They are pressuring me, and I've done nothing wrong ? they are telling me that they can help me with immigration and help me get my papers, but I don't believe that garbage.?
On another recording, one of the detectives is allegedly offering the illegal immigrant assistance with his immigration status.
Now, Lebron and the National Latino Officers Association are asking for an independent prosecutor to look into the case. They say Labron was charged in retaliation for a discrimination lawsuit he brought against the Spring Valley Police Department last year.
Commenting on the officer?s case, Rockland County District Attorney Tom Zugibe said in a written statement that he is confident the Spring Valley Police Department ?conducted a fair and impartial investigation. If the defendant believes that he is in possession of evidence demonstrating any improprieties, it behooves him to bring it to the attention of the DA's office for review.?
Lebron is expected to be back in court next Monday to face pending charges.
