Tappan Zee Bridge reopens after deadly tractor-trailer accident
Traffic on the Tappan Zee Bridge was moving smoothly Wednesday morning, a day after a deadly accident caused the bridge to shut down.
Police say a tractor-trailer traveling southbound hit a disabled car around 3 p.m. Tuesday. They say both vehicles burst into flames on impact. The driver of the car, 41-year-old Angel Norales of the Bronx, was killed. The passenger of the car, 43-year-old Escolastico Arzu, also of the Bronx, caught on fire but managed to get out of the vehicle and jump into the Hudson River. Arzu was rescued and is in stable condition at Westchester Medical Center.
The driver of the tractor-trailer and his passenger were treated for minor injuries. No charges have been filed against the truck driver and the cause of the accident is under investigation. The state Thruway Authority is currently assessing damage to the pavement and the bridge.
