Transformer fire knocks out power for hundreds
A transformer fire in Cortlandt Manor knocked out power for hundreds of homes overnight.
Fire officials say the transformer exploded and caught fire around 11 p.m. Wednesday at the corner of Oregon and Pump House roads. They say flames were shooting about 50 feet in the air.
Dozens of fire and emergency crews were on the scene including Westchester's Hazmat team, the New York State Department of Conservation, and teams from Con Edison. Crews had to cut the power to try and isolate the transformer before firefighters could even begin trying to douse the flames.
Fire crews had to use foam on the electrical fire and once they started that operation the flames began to die out. It took about 3 hours to get everything under control.
No one was injured during the fire.
At one point as many as 200 customers were without power but that number dropped once the transformer was isolated and fire extinguished.
Con Edison is making repairs but it is not known yet how long it will be before power is fully restored.
