W. Nyack homeowners blame water co. for flood woes
Some West Nyack residents who were hit hard by the recent nor'easter are tallying up damage and blaming the water company.
The Clarkstown Highway Department spent Monday clearing large piles of debris from Klein Avenue homes. Authorities say the pile of furniture, appliances and rubble was as high as 8 feet in some spots. The debris includes personal belongings that many residents say took a lifetime to acquire."I'm beside myself. I don't know what I'm going to do. I have no place to go. I've been here for 44 years," homeowner Angelina Sandt said.
Others are more angry than distressed. "[United Water] should have anticipated this. Everybody was made aware of the storm and they did nothing about it," said Jim Flahive. Residents complain the utility company should have released water from its reservoir before the storm, not during the rainfall.
Clarkstown officials held an emergency meeting on the matter Monday night. Meanwhile, the Red Cross has set up a disaster assistance center at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona. The center will be open April 24 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
