High school students in Westchester were awarded scholarships for representing the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Two of the four recipients are Stepinac High School senior Kyle Shepherd and Peekskill High School senior Kendall Cousins.
Both were born well after Dr. King's historic moments during the civil rights movement, but both young men are working to make their community a better place just like he did.
"Over the summer, I worked as an intern with the Greenburgh Town Hall. It was a virtual internship. We created video PSAs for our communities, from COVID-19 safety for teenagers to racial equality," says Shepherd.
"I helped founded an organization called Black Diamonds Academic Sucess Program. A few of my friends, one day, we were basically in the backyard and we were looking for something to do over the summer, and we just thought like how about let's help our community," says Cousins.
Those experiences helped them get a $2,500 Albertina Bloom scholarship from the Westchester Community Foundation, in partnership with the African American Men of Westchester, at the group's 20th annual MLK Youth Legacy Awards, which was held virtually on Monday.
The money will help the college-bound Cousins on his path in mechanical engineering and for Shepherd who is heading to Yale for cognitive science.
Seven other Westchester students were also given awards at the event for representing the spirit of Dr. King.
