Wheels are now in motion on a new addition to the Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge.

Construction has begun on the shared-use bike pedestrian path that will stretch the span of the Mario Cuomo Bridge and beyond.

Avid bikers on either side of the span say they are thrilled.

The project would also bring a wave of new business into towns on both sides of the span.

A recent study found that the completed shared path over the bridge will bring an estimated 50,000 annual visitors, which is great news for towns like Tarrytown and Nyack, but South Nyack residents say they are worried.

“As much as it's going to beautify our area it’s also going to be a burden on our residents because we don't have anything for people to come to, we are completely residential,” says South Nyack Mayor Bonnie Christian.

Christian says the preference in South Nyack would be to have it open from dawn to dusk and not to have it 24/7. She says the current plan would be a strain on local police forces with the need for around-the-clock patrols.

Dave Zornow, of Bike Nyack, says he sees the path as an opportunity to commute for less - and it should apply to people who don't work a traditional 9-to-5 job.

“There's concern that if the hours of the sharing path are limited, those people aren't going to be able to use bikes to get around,” he says.

The path is estimated to be completed in 2019.
