Dozens gathered for a candlelight vigil in Hartsdale Thursday evening to remember Jonathon Maldonado.
Police say they were told by eyewitnesses that Maldonado was seen ingesting packets of a substance before the altercation, but family members deny the claims.
A medical examiner ruled that his death was due to a toxic mix of fentanyl and heroin.
His family filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Town of Greenburgh alleging excessive force caused Maldonado's death.
Maldonado was a teacher's aide in Yonkers before his death. Teachers say he was organized and well-liked by students.
Greenburgh officials say a report from the state on this case will be released soon.
