Two possible cases of swine flu were reported in Rockland County Tuesday as the number of illnesses grows nationwide.
"They have traveled to Mexico, which is one of the potential criteria for a suspect case definition, and fortunately they are doing well and they are recovering from their illness," says Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Joan Facelle of the two possible cases.
So far, there have been no confirmed cases of the disease in the Hudson Valley. However, school districts across Rockland County are taking precautionary measures.
"We hope this is nothing, but we're prepared if this turns into something for Rockland County," says North Rockland Superintendent Brian Monahan.
The South Orangetown School District asked cleaning crews to come in Tuesday night and disinfect all of its buildings.
At least 64 swine flu cases have been confirmed in the U.S., including 45 cases in New York. It is suspected in up to 152 deaths in Mexico, with 20 deaths confirmed so far in that country.
The virus, which began in Mexico, has spread to at least six other countries. The WHO has raised its alert level to Phase 4, two steps below pandemic stage. Officials discourage nonessential travel to Mexico, and arriving travelers are being questioned at the Mexican border.
Symptoms of swine flu include a fever of more than 100 degrees, coughing, joint aches, severe headache, vomiting and diarrhea.
