A 2-year-old boy died Saturday morning after falling 20 floors out of a window at a Newark apartment building.

The 20th floor is the highest floor of the building along Elizabeth Avenue.

First responders first got the call around 7 a.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The prosecutor's office confirmed the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

News 12 talked with Annia Richardson, who has lived at the property for over 40 years. She felt like the tragedy could have been avoided and alleged there are problems with getting things fixed at the building.

News 12 reached out to the building's management company, Elizabeth Towers, for comment but hadn't heard back as of Saturday night.

"They don't have enough help, I'll say it, to get things done," Richardson said.

From Elizabeth Avenue, passersby can see cracked windows, some windows with tape, and some trash bags as a cover.

News 12 also spoke with Paul Ankrah, who has lived at the tower for three years. He said if tenants have a child, those who run the towers will install a barricade in their unit before they move in and it covers the whole window.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Essex County Prosecutor's Office tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
