The Village of Haverstraw experienced some of the highest COVID-19 rates in Rockland County and is now getting some help with 200 doses of the vaccine expected to arrive Friday.
Despite vaccines hitting the arms of many New Yorkers, not a single dose has landed in Haverstraw.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo to press for doses for the village, stressing that nearly 15% of the population of the village tested positive for COVID-19. Day says that's the highest in Rockland County.
"It's concerning. I realize the rollout has been difficult and you can't have it everywhere immediately, but we are a community of color," says Village of Haverstraw Mayor Michael Kohut.
The mayor says three-quarters of the people living in the village are Black or Hispanic.
The state has focused on vaccinating COVID-19-devastated communities of color by offering pop-up clinics in a number of areas.
"We're very hopeful it will be very soon," says Kohut. "Our state legislators, Assemblyman Zebrowski and Sen. Skoufis drafted a letter to the state with the endorsement of the local municipalities--Haverstraw village, West Haverstraw Village, Town of Haverstraw…"
News 12 is told that community groups will be booking the vaccine appointments.
