West Haverstraw officials say they are still looking for a way to resolve a years-old flooding problem despite the storm-drains keep overflowing.
West Haverstraw Mayor Robert D’Amelio told News 12 the village has spent close to $900,000 in recent years trying to fix this problem. They’ve installed new catch basins, new water lines and even repaved the area. But D’Amelio acknowledged there are problems they can see that contribute to the flooding, but they can't fix them because they don't have the authority.
One of the overflowing catch basins located near Hurd Avenue and state Route 202 is on private property, so it’s the state’s responsibility to address the situation.
"We have asked the state for years -- for years -- to look into this, help us out, and redo the drainage there,” said D’Amelio.
A New York state Department of Transportation spokesperson in a statement said, “DOT crews rebuilt the catch-basin earlier this year. And a recent inspection and clean-out verified positive water flow during testing.”
D'Amelio acknowledged the village isn't done exploring its options.
