Volunteers from the Hudson Valley are gathering to help the victims of wildfires in Hawaii.

The Afya Foundation is a medical supply nonprofit that serves to bolster health care infrastructure in places impacted by disaster, war, and disease.

The foundation said it's assessing the area's needs.

At least 67 people have died in the wildfire as of Friday night, and the death toll is expected to rise.

Founder and CEO Danielle Butin said Afya has been in contact with groups on the island and is gathering information about medical and humanitarian needs to determine what needs to be delivered.

She said they are ready to get supplies there at the beginning of next week. That includes burn and wound care, oxygen supplies, and wheelchairs, walkers and canes.

"When people have to leave fast, many of the items, especially for elders and people living with disabilities, they have to abandon everything in their home and this is becoming a big need is what we're hearing from the shelters," Butin said.

Next, Afya said it will start collecting what shelters need. Residents who want to help are encouraged to gather hygiene items, including soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, and shampoo.

They can also donate financially on Afya's website.
