There’s good news for dogs, cats and the community in Goshen. The Hudson Valley SPCA is now taking over the town’s Humane Society after its longtime operators retired and the shelter closed last week.

As News 12 first reported in July, the shelter on Police Drive closed Aug. 15 after its longtime operators, Rick and Susan Bosley, retired.

“I saw your story so, when I heard that Goshen Humane was shutting down, it like tugged on all our heartstrings,” said Hudson Valley SPCA President Joan Kay.

Kay says talks with Town of Goshen officials went well and that the shelter will officially reopen to house dogs and cats Aug. 24.

“It’s so needed,” said Kay. “We do cover all of Goshen however, having the space and covering it are two different things.”

The Hudson Valley SPCA will still have their no-kill shelter operations in New Windsor. Kay says the second location will help them better cover the county’s animal needs.

“We are so excited. It’ll be a lot of work but honestly, I think in the long run it’ll be better for the whole community,” said Kay.

News 12 reached out to the Town of Goshen for information but didn’t immediately hear back. Kay says the town has committed to provide $55,000 annually to fund the shelter and an animal control officer.

The shelter’s previous operators said they volunteered and worked without pay since they started operating it in 2005, adding it cost roughly $220,000 each year to fund operations.

Kay says both Hudson Valley SPCA’s locations will now be almost completely funded by donations and that help, as always, is needed.
