The mother of a Highland Middle School student allegedly sexually assaulted for a year by a group of football players in school has now filed a notice of claim against the district, which is the first step toward a lawsuit.

Court documents filed by an attorney for the victim's mother, Heather Goudreau, allege the eighth-grade 13-year-old student told his football coach and a gym teacher he was being sexually assaulted by fellow players in the locker room.

The document claims instead of helping, staff allegedly said they weren't "babysitters," refused to monitor the locker room area and threatened the entire team with "bear crawls uphill."

State police are investigating the allegations. So far, no charges have been filed.

The Highland Central School District settled a sexual assault lawsuit involving a former high school student athlete in 2022. It alleged the district engaged in sexual discrimination, battery, neglect and intentional infliction of emotional distress by allegedly failing to protect the female student after she came forward with sexual assault allegations against a female teammate.

News 12 reached out to the highland school district for comment but haven't heard back.
