The tense situation unfolded moments before dismissal on Tuesday afternoon as authorities tracked the suspected shooter of an NYPD officer to Port Chester.

The sequence of events commenced around 11:30 a.m. According to investigators, an off-duty NYPD officer was sitting in a car near the Saw Mill River Parkway and Tompkins Avenue when an assailant approached and fired multiple rounds, injuring the officer in the arm in what police describe as a targeted attack.

Subsequently, the area, including a section of the parkway, was closed for several hours as law enforcement investigated.

The pursuit of a person of interest led police to Port Chester. Following an address lead, officers located the suspect and his vehicle, taking him into custody without incident. As a precautionary measure, investigators advised Port Chester High School officials to delay dismissal, prompting the school to initiate a temporary lockout for added safety.

The injured NYPD officer reportedly drove himself to Saint John's Hospital in Yonkers and was later transferred to an area trauma center, where he remains in stable condition.

No identities have been disclosed, and the motive behind the targeted attack is still under investigation.
