The athletic directors of the East Ramapo and Scarsdale school districts in a joint statement denounced racially charged comments aimed at East Ramapo basketball players during a charity game on Saturday.

The girls’ basketball teams were playing in a game at Scarsdale High School to raise awareness and funds to support cancer research.

According to the joint statement:

“Late in the 4th quarter, the East Ramapo coach stopped the game and reported that during the game, racially charged comments from the stands were directed at his players. Unfortunately, the game ended, the East Ramapo players left Scarsdale feeling dejected and disrespected, and a day intended to bring communities together for a common purpose was tainted.”

A review of the game, along with interviews with those in attendance and referees, has not identified an individual or group who engaged in any inappropriate conduct.

“Despite the absence of specific information, we view any act against the dignity of any student-athlete as unacceptable,” the statement says. “I know that the Scarsdale and East Ramapo communities join us in denouncing all acts of hate.”
