Authorities say a person is in custody following a mental health emergency that led to the discovery of a possible explosive device in their apartment Friday afternoon in the Village of Chester.

News 12 was first alerted by viewers and residents around 12:30 p.m. that there was a large police presence at the Pine Hollow Commons.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office has launched an investigation.

Rockland County Bomb Squad reported to the scene, among other agencies.

News 12 saw at least one agent with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives at the scene.

The Town of Chester police says they deployed a K-9 unit, trained in explosives to the scene.

Authorities say they evacuated some of the people who live in the units out of concern that there could be a live explosive.

The town supervisor, who lives in one of the units, told News 12 he was temporarily displaced Friday afternoon.

It was not immediately clear if any charges will be filed.
